* feat(coding-agent): allow comments and trailing commas in models.json
Run user-supplied models.json through a small `stripJsonComments` helper
before JSON.parse so users can annotate their config and leave trailing
commas without breaking the loader.

* fix(coding-agent): strip comments before trailing commas in models.json
The single-pass regex couldn't see a trailing comma when a `//` comment sat
between the comma and its closer. Split into two passes: strip comments
first, then strip trailing commas on the cleaned input.

Previously, registerProvider() overwrote the stored config for a provider,
so a models registration followed by a baseUrl/headers-only override lost
the models. After refresh(), only the override-only config was replayed,
causing extension-provided models to disappear.
Added upsertRegisteredProvider() that merges defined fields into the
existing stored config instead of replacing it. Fields absent from the
incoming config are preserved from the stored config.
Also adds regression tests for dynamic provider override persistence
across refresh.
* fix(typebox): migrate to v1 with extension compat
Replace AJV-based validation with TypeBox-native validation, keep legacy extension imports working (including @sinclair/typebox/compiler), and restore coercion for serialized/plain JSON schemas.
This change closes#3112.
* fix(typebox): use canonical imports and harden coercion
Switch first-party code to canonical typebox imports while retaining legacy extension aliases in the loader.
Remove obsolete runtime codegen guards, expand serialized JSON-schema coercion coverage, and update related tests and fixtures.
Fixes#3112.

* fix(coding-agent): surface models.json load errors on stderr in --list-models
When models.json has validation errors, --list-models silently
discarded custom models and overrides without any user-visible
feedback. Now prints the error to stderr via chalk.yellow warning
before listing available models.
* fix(coding-agent): allow custom models for built-in providers in models.json
Built-in providers (openrouter, anthropic, etc.) already have api and
baseUrl on every model, and auth comes from env vars / auth storage.
Relax validation so custom models under built-in providers don't need
redundant baseUrl, apiKey, or api fields. Inherit them from the first
built-in model for that provider.

The OpenRouterRouting interface only had only and order, but the runtime
passes the entire object as-is to the OpenRouter API's provider field.
This means all other fields worked at runtime but had no TypeScript
type-checking, no autocomplete, and no config validation.
This adds all fields from the OpenRouter provider selection API
(https://openrouter.ai/docs/guides/routing/provider-selection):
allow_fallbacks, require_parameters, data_collection, zdr,
enforce_distillable_text, ignore, quantizations, sort, max_price,
preferred_min_throughput, preferred_max_latency.
Also fixes the models.md documentation which had an invalid fallbacks
field in the example (not part of the OpenRouter API), replaces it with
a comprehensive example showing all available fields, and clarifies that
openRouterRouting is sent as-is in the provider field.
API keys in auth.json now support the same resolution as models.json:
- Shell command: "\!command" executes and uses stdout (cached)
- Environment variable: uses the value of the named variable
- Literal value: used directly
Extracted shared resolveConfigValue() to new resolve-config-value.ts module.
Model definitions now only require 'id'. All other fields have sensible
defaults for local models (Ollama, LM Studio, etc.):
- name: defaults to id
- reasoning: defaults to false
- input: defaults to ["text"]
- cost: defaults to {input: 0, output: 0, cacheRead: 0, cacheWrite: 0}
- contextWindow: defaults to 128000
- maxTokens: defaults to 16384
Existing configs that specify all fields continue to work unchanged.
Fixes#1146
* feat(ai): add Vercel AI Gateway routing support
Add vercelGatewayRouting to OpenAICompletionsCompat, parallel to
openRouterRouting. When a model targets ai-gateway.vercel.sh and has
vercelGatewayRouting configured, the openai-completions provider passes
providerOptions.gateway with only/order in the request body.
Changes:
- types.ts: VercelGatewayRouting interface + field on OpenAICompletionsCompat
- openai-completions.ts: buildParams passes providerOptions.gateway,
detectCompat/getCompat include the new field
- model-registry.ts: VercelGatewayRoutingSchema for models.json validation
- test: updated Required<OpenAICompletionsCompat> in test fixture
* docs(coding-agent): add vercelGatewayRouting to custom models documentation
Allows custom models to specify which upstream providers OpenRouter
should route requests to via the `openRouterRouting` field in model
definitions.
Supported fields:
- `only`: list of provider slugs to exclusively use
- `order`: list of provider slugs to try in order
- Add resetApiProviders() to clear and re-register built-in providers
- Add createAssistantMessageEventStream() factory for extensions
- Add streamSimple support in ProviderConfig for custom API implementations
- Call resetApiProviders() on /reload to clean up extension providers
- Add custom-provider.md documentation
- Add custom-provider.ts example with full Anthropic implementation
- Update extensions.md with streamSimple config option
Header values in models.json now resolve using the same logic as apiKey:
- Environment variable names are resolved to their values
- Shell commands prefixed with ! are executed
- Literal values are used directly
This is a minor breaking change: if a header value accidentally matches
an env var name, it will now resolve to that env var's value.
Fixes#909
- Add ResourceLoader interface and DefaultResourceLoader implementation
- Add PackageManager for npm/git extension sources with install/remove/update
- Add session.reload() and session.bindExtensions() APIs
- Add /reload command in interactive mode
- Add CLI flags: --skill, --theme, --prompt-template, --no-themes, --no-prompt-templates
- Add pi install/remove/update commands for extension management
- Refactor settings.json to use arrays for skills, prompts, themes
- Remove legacy SkillsSettings source flags and filters
- Update SDK examples and documentation for ResourceLoader pattern
- Add theme registration and loadThemeFromPath for dynamic themes
- Add getShellEnv to include bin dir in PATH for bash commands
Fixes OpenAI Responses 400 error 'reasoning without following item' by
skipping errored/aborted assistant messages entirely rather than filtering
at the provider level. This covers openai-responses, openai-codex-responses,
and future providers.
Removes strictResponsesPairing compat option (no longer needed).
Closes#838
Split OpenAICompat into OpenAICompletionsCompat and OpenAIResponsesCompat
for type-safe API-specific compat settings. Added strictResponsesPairing
option to suppress orphaned reasoning/tool calls on incomplete turns,
fixing 400 errors on Azure's Responses API which requires strict pairing.
Closes#768
* Support shell command execution for API key resolution in models.json
Add ! prefix support to apiKey field in models.json to execute shell commands
and use stdout as the API key. This allows users to store API keys in secure
credential managers like macOS Keychain, 1Password, Bitwarden, or HashiCorp Vault.
Example: "apiKey": "!security find-generic-password -ws 'anthropic'"
The apiKey field now supports three formats:
- !command - executes shell command, uses trimmed stdout
- ENV_VAR_NAME - uses environment variable value
- literal - uses value directly
fixes#697
* feat(coding-agent): cache API key command results for process lifetime
Shell commands (! prefix) are now executed once and cached. Environment
variables and literal values are not cached, so changes are picked up.
Addresses review feedback on #762.

- Remove per-thinking-level model variants (gpt-5.2-codex-high, etc.)
- Remove thinkingLevels from Model type
- Provider clamps reasoning effort internally
- Omit reasoning field when thinking is off
fixes#472
getAvailable() now uses hasAuth() which checks if auth is configured
without triggering OAuth token refresh. Refresh happens later when
the model is actually used.
Builds on #406 to support simpler proxy use case:
- Override just baseUrl to route built-in provider through proxy
- All built-in models preserved, no need to redefine them
- Full replacement still works when models array is provided
